Group Sound Walks can be profound and revelatory: walking in attentive quiet, in the safe company of others, is a rare experience.

Join musician and sound artist Emma Welton for a short walk from THG through Honiton’s many sonic environments. Walking slowly, pausing frequently, we’ll open our ears fully to the changing symphony around us, noticing how different seasons, weather, built structures and landscapes change what we hear. We’ll seek out sounds and allow sounds to find us. We’ll explore unlikely places, discover hidden sounds and even make our own. We’ll remember the sounds of the past and consider the sounds of the future. Emma’s Sound Walks are designed for people who are open to a different kind of walk, and who are curious about finding new detail in a familiar place. Fun, whatever your age!

Please bring a light, folding chair if you need to sit to listen from time to time during our walk.

Emma Welton is a composer, sound artist and violinist. She works with musicians, other artists and communities to create new work, often springing from shared listening and sound walks. She loves to work outdoors. Emma’s Exeter Sound Walks were shortlisted for the Sound Walk September award in 2020 and were featured in 2022’s Art Week Exeter and BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme. Emma has led Sound Walks for Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Sidmouth Science Festival, traversing the new and old communities of Pinhoe and all-day along the river Exe from Exeter to Exmouth. She has made and contributed to a number of podcasts about listening and Sound Walks. She is currently overwintering with the birds on the Exe Estuary.
