East Devon’s Thelma Hulbert Gallery (THG) is set to launch ‘Harrison’s Garden’: an ambitious new art installation as part of the national Museums at Night festival this October.

After defeating other UK venues to win the chance to work with celebrated international artist Luke Jerram, THG is hosting the artist’s spectacular clock installation featuring 1,000 clocks at their public art gallery in Honiton, Devon.

Luke Jerram, who is based in Bristol, commented 'This is an exciting opportunity to collaborate with an arts organisation I've not worked with before, on a new experimental project. It's a great privilege. Having collected hundreds of old clocks and sorted them into categories and sizes, I will create a garden of time. The clock-maker John Harrison’s clocks were a breakthrough in chronology, hence Harrison’s Garden. Winding pathways will draw visitors through the shifting landscape. Each area of the installation will sound different. The public will recognise some of the clocks from their home and from their past. The cacophony of clock sounds will heighten the visitor’s awareness of time passing.’

Luke Jerram is an internationally renowned artist, with work exhibited throughout the world including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.  He is known throughout the South West for his ‘Park and Slide’ which transformed Bristol’s Park Street into a giant water slide.

Gallery Curator, Angela Blackwell praised the public support which saw the gallery winning the national vote ‘’Winning has given us this fantastic opportunity to work with Luke Jerram. We have collected a thousand clocks for Luke to create this installation in the gallery which opens from 27 – 31 October with a really exciting programme of activities, talks and workshops throughout the week.THG will be open till 10pm on Friday 30 and Saturday 31 October to celebrate the Museums At Night Festival”

Harrison’s Garden : 27 – 31 October. Open Tuesday 27 to Thursday 29 October 10am – 8pm, Friday 30 and Saturday 31 October 10am – 10pm. Children’s activities all week in the Learning Room.

Wednesday 28 October : 11am to 3pm Drop in family workshop, free (suggested donation £2/child)

Thursday 29 October : 10am-1pm Clock valuations by Bearnes, Hampton & Littlewood auctioneers

Friday 30 October : Artist’s talk by Luke Jerram at 6.30pm at the Beehive, Honiton. £10 (£8 THG Friends – please quote membership number). To book, visit www.beehivehoniton.co.uk. The gallery will be open till 10pm after the talk where Luke Jerram will be available to answer questions.

Saturday 31 October : 11am to 3pm Drop in family workshop free (suggested donation £2/child) culminating in spectacular Saturday night countdown event to celebrate Museums At Night.
