THG Open 2023 Winners : Kyle Baker
25 May 2024 to 6 July 2024
Lower Gallery - exhibition of work by photographer Kyle Baker, winner of Best Emerging Artist prize in the THG Open 2023.
Kyle Baker is a self-taught photographer and film maker based in Sidmouth, East Devon. He set up his business with the help of the Prince's Trust in 2016. Kyle specialises in seascapes alongside landscapes and nightscapes.
Kyle is always on or by the sea, surfing from a young age and as part of the crew of the Sidmouth Independent Lifeboat for the last seven years.
'Recently, I have been spending time trying to capture the aurora borealis activity in the south, but between the clouds, which is a challenge! I am looking forward to the Milky Way season and capturing sunsets from the sea. Throughout the summer, when my work really kicks off, I just enjoy being able to relax and spend time photographing images for myself.
I am very much an “in the moment” photographer. I try to capture moments which other people might not be able to see or enjoy, especially from the perspective of the sea. Actually being in the sea as I take the photos adds a totally unique dimension to the artworks.
I love seeing and reading people’s reactions to my work, especially to well-known places pictured in ways they may not have seen before. These reactions influence my future work. The beautiful light in this area and how it is constantly changing always inspires me to photograph new landscapes.'
