Magic Carpet at THG

to

Magic Carpet at THG features work produced by a local group of adults with learning disabilities in art work-shops run by local arts-for-health charity Magic Carpet. The group worked with Honiton-born author Clive Essame and sculptor James Lake to create an exhibition of collage and sculpture that illustrates the story of Impisi, a book written by Clive Essame. The artwork is accompanied by a series of five extracts from the book.

Impisi is the story of a young male lion, Nkosi, who is about to take over the pride when he is caught in a wire snare. He escapes but has a badly damaged leg. The lion regains control over his life, lifting himself from the depths of despair to fulfil his true potential.

Author Clive Essame commented: “Impisi teaches us about prejudice and disability awareness, looking at how people with disabilities might see themselves and how others see them. Working on this exhibition with the Magic Carpet participants, who all have learning disabilities, has been great; they have really enjoyed the creative experience”.
