NATURE SHORT 2 - Gabrielle Hoad and Megan Calver

To mark Earth Day we are launching a new NATURE SHORT ‘Experiments with nature outdoors and at home, finding new narratives and new readings’ from artists Gabrielle Hoad and Megan Calver.
This year, as part of our ARTIST ROOMS Richard Long exhibition, we have been working with Devon-based artists Megan Calver and Gabrielle Hoad
One of the fundamental aims of ARTIST ROOMS is for the collection to be used to engage new audiences through innovative methods. Hoad and Calver were inspired by Richard Long’s use of words in relation to landscape. Long has stated his text works can ‘feed the imagination’ in just a handful of words.
This ‘NATURE SHORT’ is an insight into preparations for a future text and performance project Hoad and Calver are developing working with Honiton’s young people. It is also a gentle invitation to experiment at home.
“In the autumn we hope to invite people to join us out of doors to generate and perform texts spliced from found elements. For now, we are experimenting with buckets, basins and baths in our homes, using items such as wax paper discs to stand in for floating leaves and logs. Flows of water and air rearrange and edit the elements to make narratives of their own.”

Frequent collaborators since 2015, Megan Calver and Gabrielle Hoad share an interest in generating site-responsive work through oblique approaches to field study. They often draw on the input of human and nonhuman participants.
Part of Culture + Climate 2020 in partnership with East Devon AONB, NATURE SHORTS is an online series showcasing art practices which inspire, build creativity and deepen our connection with nature especially during isolation. Every Wednesday April - June
