The Glow of Hours: Rebecca Partridge in Devon

23 March 2024 to 11 May 2024

Exhibition in the Upstairs Gallery.

This exhibition brings together a collection of paintings by Rebecca Partridge including a new series of small works made in response to the local Devon landscape.

Partridge typically creates works in series responding to particular locations, which have included deserts, glaciers and ancient forests, often observed over marked periods of time. Using a range of approaches, the works in this exhibition shift between acutely observed oil paintings of wild flowers at night, found in the local landscape of Honiton, to large watercolours of skies, built of dozens of thin washes on raw canvas, painted from memories of observing the transitions of dusk and dawn in the Mojave desert. Collectively the paintings begin to connect different qualities of light, time, place and process.

Artist Talk: Rebecca Partridge in Conversation. Saturday 23 March, 11-12. £3.00 - book

It is accompanied by the launch of the artists’ first print edition, ‘Forest Dawn’ made through the traditional process of Japanese woodblock printing. This project was generously funded by Arts Council England. With thanks to poet Alice Oswald, whose poem ‘Marginalia at the Edge of the Evening’ inspired the title of the exhibition.

Rebecca Partridge is an artist currently based in London. Since graduating from the Royal Academy Schools in 2007, she has exhibited internationally and been awarded several international scholarships, including from The Nordic Kunstnasenter Dale, (Norway), The Josef and Anni Albers Foundation (USA), and The Terra Foundation for American Art (summer Fellowship in Giverny, France). Over the past ten years, she has curated a series of exhibitions taking place in Germany, Norway and the UK.
