New mosaic table created by local school children

Local school children from Littletown Primary Academy and Honiton Primary have helped to create a new mosaic table for the THG garden during creative workshops with artist Karen Wydler.

THG won the grant to fund these workshops in the Tesco Bags of Help public vote at Tesco stores.

The workshops used material drawn from the gallery's archive, as well as drawings and poems created by the children, using the artist Thelma Hulbert's life and paintings. The artist Karen Wydler explained,

“In the workshops, the children mostly spoke about nature and the importance of friendship and caring for others. They made 3D models to explore designs for the artwork, and made small mosaics. The children were really excited to be involved in making a permanent, public artwork.

The mosaic was made like a collage with small pieces placed together.  We also printed text and images onto the porcelain tiles using ceramic transfers.

I am always happy to be given the opportunity to celebrate the life of an artist and I hope Thelma’s archive will be made more accessible though this work. Visitors will be able to see each of the small details while sitting at the table.”

Angela Blackwell, THG Curator said,

“We are thrilled to have this beautiful new seating area in our community garden. We plan to use it for workshops and families can also enjoy a picnic around it. We could not have done this without this generous grant from Tesco and would like to thank them and everyone who voted for us!”
