A benefactor has donated a significant artwork by artist Thelma Hulbert to the Honiton gallery bearing her name.

Ms Gunnel Rosengard has generously donated ‘Still Life with Dead Flowers’ to the Thelma Hulbert Gallery (THG). This key piece was featured in Thelma Hulbert’s solo retrospective exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery, London in 1962.

Bryan Robertson, Director of the Whitechapel Gallery at the time said “The work itself shows the steady technical development of a very considerable artist and an extraordinary personal vision. Her manner of painting has a special depth and thoughtfulness.”

The painting is now on display alongside the collection of artworks by the artist in the Thelma Hulbert Room at the gallery.

Angela Blackwell (THG Curator) commented,

“We are absolutely thrilled to add this artwork to our collection. It was quite an achievement for a women to have a solo show at the Whitechapel Gallery in the 1960’s. Being recognised by the Whitechapel and also having work in the Tate Collection in London underlines the standing of Thelma Hulbert as an artist.”
